Synopsis

“Souls of a River” is a search for traces of the fragile concept of identity.
A filmmaker as a traveller, meets a forensic doctor, who fights for the dignity of drowned refugees, on the Evros River, which marks the EU’s southern external border between Greece and Turkey.
At the border between the unknown and home, life and death, memories and the forgotten, the fragility of human identity is revealed.

„Seelen eines Flusses“ ist eine Spurensuche nach dem fragilen Begriff der Identität. Der Filmemacher als Reisender trifft am Fluss Evros, der zwischen Griechenland und der Türkei die Außengrenze der EU markiert, auf einen Pathologen, der für die Würde ertrunkener Flüchtlinge kämpft. An der Grenze zwischen Fremde und Heimat, Leben und Tod, Erinnern und Vergessen wird die Zerbrechlichkeit menschlicher Identität ausgelotet.

Director's Statement

„Souls of a River“ uses narrative patterns and associations. The film is a cinematic poem, an essay about a region of the world that has recently become the focus of international reports: Evros in Greece.

Greece is facing permanent conflicts with Turkey and often feels left alone by Europe.

„Souls of a River“ is about my home country in this beautiful area in the north-east of Greece, the Evros. The river is the south-eastern external border of the EU. The topic of the film is of transnational importance and urgency. For me it is only logical to look poetically at references and contexts, at tensions and moments; and possibly the salutary, tranquility and beauty of the world.

Regiestatement

Der Film „Souls of a River“ ist ein Dokumentarfilm, der sich erzählerischer Muster bedient, Assoziationen bildet. Der Film ist ein filmisches Gedicht, ein Essay, über einen Landstrich dieser Erde, der in letzter Zeit in den internationalen Fokus der Berichterstattungen gekommen ist: Evros in Griechenland.

In einer Zeit, wo das krisengebeutelte Griechenland vor permanenten Konflikten mit dem Nachbarland Türkei steht, sich von Europa oftmals allein gelassen fühlt, haben wir diesen Film gemacht.

„Souls of a River“ erzählt über mein Heimatland an diesem wunderschönen Gebiet im Nordosten Griechenlands, dem Evros. Schließlich ist der Fluss, die südöstliche Außengrenze der EU. Die Thematik des Filmes zeigt sich von länderübergreifender Bedeutung und Dringlichkeit. Für mich ist es nur logisch, poetisch zu schauen, auf Bezüge und Zusammenhänge, auf Spannungen und Momente; und der heilsamen möglicherweise, Ruhe und Schönheit der Welt.

Born 1965 in Athens, he is Greek and German citizen. Graduated in 1999 his studies in film direction at the Filmakademie Wien / Film Academy Vienna with summa cum laude.
